Blair has had an excellent season

Calcutta Cup-winning captain and scrum-half Mike Blair has been named Scotland's player of the season.

The 27-year-old was chosen at the 2008 Scottish Rugby Awards ceremony held at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh.

Blair was also named Scotland's Magners League player of the season at the awards broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland.

He said: "To captain Scotland in this season's Six Nations was a dream come true and these awards cap a fantastic season for me."

Blair thought it was a rollercoaster year for Scottish rugby as a whole.

"We did not start off the Six Nations well," he said.

"There was a kind of negativity pushed towards the Scottish team.

"And, when we beat England, the emotion should have been pure joy, but the overriding feeling was relief."

Blair's Edinburgh and Scotland team-mate, hooker Ross Ford, won the try of the season award for his Heineken Cup score against Leicester Tigers.
