Townsend was one of Scotland's most talented players ever

The 33-year-old Borders player, who won 82 caps for his country and featured on two Lions tours, has had a frustrating time with injury recently.

Townsend starred for Gala, Northampton Saints, Brive, Castres and Natal Sharks in a glittering career.

"My aim is to play one more season and play as many games as I can," he said.

"Like any player, you want to play your best, so I'm hoping I can do that for one final season.

"I can't see past this year unless there's some miracle of science that keeps my body going for a year beyond that.

"But I think this would be a good season to hang up the boots."

Townsend plans to do some coaching with the Borders this season, with a view to continuing in a similar role, though not necessarily with the Borders, beyond that.

"I'd be interested in going into coaching, using some of the knowledge I've gained over the last 10 years of being a professional," he added.

"It would make ending my career an easier transition if I can still stay in the game I love."
