Edinburgh centre Tom Philip has set his sights on a return before Christmas as he recovers from surgery.

The 21-year-old has been troubled by a back injury and was forced to undergo an operation a fortnight ago.

"I am looking forward to getting back out onto the pitch and doing what I enjoy," said the young international.

"My operation was a long procedure, however it seems to have gone well and I'll be delighted if I'm fit and ready to play again in a few months."

Philip played in four of Scotland's Six Nations matches in 2004 but suffered a bad knee injury while on the winter tour of Australia.

Frank Hadden, interim Scotland coach and Edinburgh coach, said: "Tom has been most unfortunate over the last year with injuries and hopefully this will be an end to his problems.

"Tom is an outstanding young rugby player and I'm sure all the Scotland and Edinburgh supporters will want to join with me and wish him a speedy recovery."
