Former Wales and Lions scrum-half Robert Jones has launched a withering attack on Wales' performance in their narrow 27-20 win over Tonga. Speaking to BBC Radio Wales after witnessing the game in Canberra, Jones said: "For a team that's been together for so long, it's so disappointing that we didn't have any pattern to our performance.
"(Wales coach) Steve Hansen and (captain) Colin Charvis are smiling because they got the result, but we needed the performance as well
"We can't take that performance through against Italy, because John Kirwan's side looked so much better in beating the Tongans than Wales did."
The comments are sure to further strain the tensions between the Welsh camp and the country's pundits, with wounds still sore following Hansen's pre-World Cup outburst against Jones' former international half-back partner Jonathan Davies. During Wales' 11-game losing run under Hansen, the argument over whether the country needed results or performance was the subject of a heated row with the coach, but now it seems the roles have been reversed.

"I expected us to win with plenty to spare, but the performance was poor all round," said Jones. "Tonga played the quality rugby and looked the more dangerous. We were hanging in there at the end and they deserved to score an equalising try.
"They played the wet conditions so much better than us, but we should have the experience of that sort of weather.
"The real worry for me is not that we were pushed so close by an adventurous, quality Tongan side, but that we didn't know how to play."
