Report: S Africa 72-6 Uruguay

Stand-in South Africa skipper Joost van der Westhuizen declared himself satisfied with his side's opening 72-6 rout of Uruguay in Perth.

The veteran scrum-half scored a hat-trick in the 12-try victory, extending his Springbok record of tries to 38.

"I do it for my country and I do it for the team," he said. "I enjoyed it and so did all the guys."

But Van der Westhuizen admitted the Springboks will need to improve their overall performance if they are to beat England in the crucial pool match next Saturday.

Uruguay reaction

"We just wanted to play our game plan and get through the first game with a good structure and a bit of discipline, and that is what we did," he added.

"We have still got a lot of work to do for next week and we need some sharpening up. But we are in the World Cup now."
