Ireland captain Keith Wood in action against Argentina

Ireland's battered squad gave Monday's planned training session a miss as they recovered from the exertions of a thrilling win over Argentina.

The Irish complete their Pool A programme against Australia on Saturday and victory would probably mean avoiding France in the last eight.

The narrow victory over Argentina came at a cost with flanker Alan Quinlan ruled out of the tournament because of a dislocated shoulder.

Centre Kevin Maggs (ankle strain) and number eight Victor Costello (thigh injury) have the worst problems of those left in the squad.

David Wallace is already on his way to fill the gap left by Quinlan's injury and could only offer commiserations to his Munster team-mate.

"First of all, I feel for Quinny," he told the Irish RFU website.

"It is a huge disappointment for him for his World Cup to end like this, and obviously the circumstances of my joining the squad mean that something like this had to happen.

"But that is the sort of game this is. Injury is part and parcel of it. I just wish him well and hope he will be back in action soon."

The fierce nature of Sunday's match has also persuaded Irish management to put back the naming of their side to face Australia.

Coach Eddie O'Sullivan has to assess a host of issues before picking his team to play the world champions in Melbourne.
