Jones sticks with Gregan

Wallabies great David Campese believes Australia must axe skipper George Gregan and fly-half Stephen Larkham if they are to win the World Cup.

Campese added his voice to a chorus of former players and pundits who believe Gregan must be dropped in favour of perennial reserve scrum-half Chris Whitaker.

The world record try-scorer also said in his column for Sydney's Daily Telegraph newspaper that Australia coach Eddie Jones must replace Larkham with youngster Matt Giteau.

However, Jones has insisted he will field his regular line-up when Australia meet Scotland in Saturday's quarter-final.

Campese said: "Give Whitaker his chance at half-back and give the leadership to Gregan's deputy David Giffin.

"Matt Giteau would be my five eighth (fly-half) ahead of Larkham.

"I am worried that Larkham runs too much across the field. It is not helping the outside runners."

Campese added that Morgan Turinui, Lote Tuqiri, Stirling Mortlock and Chris Latham should also come into the back line, with only Elton Flatley avoiding the Campese axe.

However, Australia coach Jones is resisting calls to change his first-choice XV.

"We are not going to experiment with the side, which has been suggested," said Jones.

"It's the quarter-final stages and now is not the time.

"We are in the knock-out part of the competition so we need to pick the best 22 to play Scotland. We obviously need to improve, but we can do that."

Jones is certainly not going to drop captain George Gregan, despite persistent question marks over the scrum-half's form compared to that of understudy Chris Whitaker.

"George is captain of the side and he's the leader of the team. He's a very important part of the team," said Jones.
