Rugby chiefs are mulling over plans for a new, biennial competition involving the three southern hemisphere nations and their Six Nations rivals. Australian Rugby Union chief executive John O'Neill said a proposal from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa had been circulated to International Rugby Board (IRB) members last week.
O'Neill added that the tournament, which could be up and running by 2006, would be staged every second November in the northern hemisphere.
O'Neill also revealed a combined Pacific Island team could enter the Super 12 competition in 2006.
At present the annual competition features the leading provinces in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
