Uruguay won the battle of Pool C's minnows to claim a well deserved victory over Georgia in a match virtually devoid of running rugby.

With neither side able to break the defensive deadlock for large parts of the game, tries from Alfonso Cardoso, Diego Lamelas and Nicolas Brignoni were enough to decide a disappointing display.

The 35,000 strong crowd might have been hoping for thrills, but instead they were treated to a frustrating display of spills.

There was little fluency on show and knock-ons and poor tactical kicking ruined the hard won ball supplied by both packs.

Uruguay made no such mistake and were rewarded for a good series of possession when full-back Juan Menchaca slotted the game's opening points.

Again Uruguay hit back, this time through hooker Lamelas with captain Diego Aguirre slotting his second conversion of the night to frustrate the east Europeans.

Kvirikashvili did manage a third consecutive penalty, but Uruguay finally sealed only their second ever World Cup win when captain Aguirre, in his 50th Test, danced through to feed substitute flanker Brignoni just before time.
