Georgia 12-24 Uruguay
Uruguay won the battle of Pool C's minnows to claim a well deserved victory over Georgia in a match virtually devoid of running rugby.
With neither side able to break the defensive deadlock for large parts of the game, tries from Alfonso Cardoso, Diego Lamelas and Nicolas Brignoni were enough to decide a disappointing display.
The 35,000 strong crowd might have been hoping for thrills, but instead they were treated to a frustrating display of spills.
There was little fluency on show and knock-ons and poor tactical kicking ruined the hard won ball supplied by both packs.
From the very start it looked likely to be a close encounter and Georgia were immediately left frustrated, when fly-half Paliko Jimsheladze's first two penalty opportunites flew wide of the posts.
Uruguay made no such mistake and were rewarded for a good series of possession when full-back Juan Menchaca slotted the game's opening points. The 'Lelos' replied through the boot of Malkhaz Urjukashvili before the crowd were treated to a rare flowing passage that resulted in the game's opening try.
A fine drive by the Uruguay pack wide on the left was finally brought to a halt, but there was little the defence could do when the ball was spun out wide to allow wing Cardoso to cross unopposed.
The second half started more brightly than the first with Georgia clearly keen to reduce the deficit. Urjukashvili failed to close the gap when Nicols Grille was caught offside, but substitute Merab Kvirikashvili made an instant impression with two well struck penalties.
It was no more than Georgia deserved, but their brief spell of dominance did not last long.
Again Uruguay hit back, this time through hooker Lamelas with captain Diego Aguirre slotting his second conversion of the night to frustrate the east Europeans. Kvirikashvili did manage a third consecutive penalty, but Uruguay finally sealed only their second ever World Cup win when captain Aguirre, in his 50th Test, danced through to feed substitute flanker Brignoni just before time.
