Captain Takuro Miuchi saluted his side's performance, after Japan pushed France all the way in Townsville. Japan were ultimately defeated 51-29, but were just one point behind the French shortly after half time.
"I'm happy we were able to show what we could do against one of the world's best teams," Miuchi said.
Japan grabbed tries through George Konia and Daisuke Ohata with winger Toru Kurihara finished ythe match with a 100% record with the boot and a 19 point haul.
France notched up six tries, but were made to work hard by an impressive Cherry Blossom side.
New Zealand-born flyhalf Andrew Miller added: "I don't know where that performance came from.
"We've got a lot of guts."
