Andrew Trimble has been ruled out of action until the start of next season as he is to undergo an operation to remove a chip behind his right patella.

The 24-year-old will go under the knife on Thursday and will require 12 weeks of rehabilitation after surgery before he returns to any gym or pitch work.

He will miss Ulster's final two Magners League games against Connacht and the Scarlets in May.

Trimble will also be unavailable for selection for Ireland's summer tour.
