Ulster are bottom of the Magners League after being beaten by Edinburgh at Ravenhill on Friday night.
The Irish province made a good start with Tommy Bowe landing his 25th league try after just four minutes.
But Edinburgh were 17-5 up at half-time thanks to tries from centre Matt Dey and full-back Ben Cairns.
Ulster had spells of pressure in the second half but Edinburgh completed back-to-back victories for the first time in more than a year.
To make matters worse for Ulster, they lost back row Roger Wilson with a fractured thumb.
Wilson is likely to be out for six weeks which would mean missing three Heineken Cup matches.
Ulster did secure a losing bonus point which means they are not alone in the basement, as it brought them level with Connacht who beat Glasgow in Galway.
The province certainly made an impressive start and scored when Mark Bartholomeusz put Bowe in at the right corner.
Dey opened the scoring for the visitors when Bartholomeusz failed to deal with a Phil Godman chip and then, four minutes later, full back Ben Cairns rounded the Ulster cover to run in from the right-wing channel.
Both scores were converted by Godman to put the visitors 14-5 in front.
Godman landed a great long-range effort and then stretched Edinburgh's lead with a second penalty five minutes after the restart.
Paddy Wallace landed two penalties before Kieran Campbell was brought on to win his 100th cap for Ulster.
With 10 minutes left, Wallace kicked a third penalty to put Ulster in touch but Edinburgh had done enough.
