McCall scathing after Ulster loss
Mark McCall
McCall will welcome back his Ireland contingent next weekend
Ulster coach Mark McCall delivered a scathing assessment of his team's display after Saturday's 31-11 Magners League hammering by the Dragons.

Ulster's display was even worse than last Friday's 24-10 defeat by Edinburgh and now sees them in bottom slot.

"Yet again, we made an unbelievable amount of errors on the ball. Simple mistakes are hurting us badly.

"We defended extremely poorly. We fell off tackles and missed a lot of tackles in the game."

McCall was unhappy with the refereeing in Saturday's match but he added that it was not the cause of his team's abject display.

"The penalty count in the first half was 8-1 I think. We seemed to be getting penalised for not releasing the ball and then getting penalised for not rolling away on their ball.

"We couldn't really understand some of the decisions but having said that, I wouldn't blame the referee for our performance or our defeat.

"I thought we were very poor for a professional side. We're making elementary errors which we have to cut out of our game."

Our Ireland players will bring some quality to the team

Mark McCall

McCall believes that the performance of his team has dropped off considerably from the pre-season games, and even the opening Magners League win over the Ospreys two weeks ago.

"The players that we've got are good enough to play better than that.

"For some reason, we have made an enormous amount of simple errors and we then seem to lose our composure and lose direction and maybe chase games."

McCall felt his team had been unlucky to concede the Dragons' second try, which he believed, should have been disallowed because of a forward pass.

"Everybody stopped bar one person. At that stage, it was 17-6 and if we had scored the next try, it would have made it more interesting. That try put the nail in the coffin."

McCall acknowledged that he will bring in among of the returning Ireland World Cup players for next weekend's game against the Scarlets at Stradey Park.

"They will bring some quality to the team. What we have produced in the last two weeks wasn't good enough."
