Saracens back row Michael Owen has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee ligament injury.

The 28-year-old Wales international suffered the injury during his side's European Challenge Cup defeat to Toulon last Thursday.

And scans suggested he would be out of action for nine months.

"The decision has been taken to repair the ligament as Michael still has many years of rugby ahead of him," said Saracens boss Brendan Venter.

"Michael is an important player for us and it is disappointing news.

"However, injuries do occur and it is one of the reasons why we believe in a rotation policy."
