Sale ended Bath's five-match winning run to boost their hopes of reaching the EDF Energy Cup quarter-finals but lost Sebastien Chabal to injury.
The iconic France number eight, making his first appearance after the World Cup, went off after 20 minutes with what looked to be a neck strain.
However, Charlie Hodgson inspired Sale and kicked 20 points while Chris Bell went over for the hosts' only try.
Lorne Ward touched down for Bath, with Shaun Berne adding the conversion.
Sale director of rugby Philippe Saint-Andre:
"We've got a lot of work to do - it's good to have the World Cup players back, but we are rusty.
"We are not precise enough in a lot of areas but it was good to beat Bath. Our defence was good but we were not precise enough in a lot of areas.
"It's a shame Sebastien Chabal had to go off with a sore neck but I don't think it's a worry."
Sale number eight Sebastien Chabal:
"I'm okay. I just got hit by a big tackle and felt pretty dazed and my neck was sore, but I'm fine."
Bath head coach Steve Meehan:
"I thought we lost the game at the breakdown.
"They got an advantage for whatever reason - I wasn't particularly happy with the way that was officiated. But that's the way the game went.
"However, our kicking game, and our kick-chase game in particular, wasn't up to scratch."
