Sale determined to keep Robinson
By Mark Orlovac

Sale chief executive Niels de Vos insists the club want to keep skipper Jason Robinson at Edgeley Park.

The England wing, 32, has hinted he may end his playing career after the World Cup if he cannot agree a new deal.

But De Vos told BBC Sport: "We would like Jason to stay, we are still talking but I genuinely think he is unsure as to what to do."

Robinson met Sale owner Brian Kennedy and coach Philippe Saint-Andre for talks over his future on Tuesday.

His deal runs out in the summer and he has expressed anger that his contract has not been sorted out sooner.

606: DEBATE

"Sale is where I want to be but you get to a certain time when other clubs can be interested," he told the Daily Mail.

"I will have to decide in the next few weeks what I want to do. When is the best time to call it a day?

"There are not many things I haven't won but I have a family to think about.

"I thought it was going to be sorted out a while ago. If you have a player you think is of some worth, you don't leave it to the last minute."

But De Vos insists the club started talks over Robinson's future last year.

I think if he carries on playing he will be playing for Sale

"I first tried to sit down with him back in October which is the one thing that is not quite correctly reported," he added.

"At that stage he said: 'I am still thinking about what I am going to do - let's leave it for a while'.

"We didn't actually get round to hammering out any nuts and bolts but we are still in that process at the moment.

"Ultimately it is a decision he will make in conjunction with his body as to whether he feels he is willing and able to do another year.

"We told him we will guarantee that he will play only a certain amount of games if he decides to stay.

"We haven't found anybody yet as a full-back, that is very clear by looking at our signatures for next year. We are still keeping a place open for him.

"I think if he carries on playing he will be playing for Sale."

The 32-year-old, who scored four tries in four games during the Six Nations, made his high-profile cross-code switch from Wigan to Sale in November 2000.

In his seven years in union he has been on two Lions tours as well as winning the World Cup with England in 2003.
