Ryan Jones and Harry Ellis both have designs on the Heineken cup. |
Ospreys skipper Ryan Jones is eagerly awaiting the chance to take on Heineken Cup rivals Leicester on Sunday and says they will give it their best shot. The Tigers have beaten the Ospreys in all but one of their previous four Heineken Cup meetings. Past clashes between the two have not been without incident. Martin Corry was banned after the game in January 2009, while Ian Evans and Gavin Henson were suspended following a brutal encounter in 2005. But Jones is putting the sides' chequered past behind them. "I think it's great, the fans enjoy it and it's developed into a healthy rivalry. We know each other inside out and have had some great fixtures," said the Ospreys skipper. The Welsh region endured a torrid start to the season but after two wins in as many games in the Magners league, Jones says they are ready for the challenge: "You've got to beat the best if you want to win this competition, so we're just going to go there and give it our best shot" The Ospreys skipper is hoping the star-studded region can improve on last year's quarter-final exit: "We've got a squad littered with fantastic individuals, good strength in depth and a huge belief we are doing things the right way." Leicester are expecting a bumper crowd at the recently developed Welford Road. The new Caterpillar Stand opened last month and boosted capacity to 24,000. Leicester scrum-half Harry Ellis said: "It's brilliant and a sign of the direction the club want to go in. It's great as a player, you want to play on the big stage." Ellis though is wary of the Ospreys threat: "It'll be a tough game, there's been a lot of rivalry down the years. The Ospreys have added some talented players to their squad, they're quality from one to 15, but we've got some talented players too." The two sides met in Pool 3 in the 2008-9 season, winning one game apiece and both qualifying for the quarter-finals, although the second game at the Liberty stadium was dogged by controversy. Tigers captain Martin Corry was banned for six weeks after being cited for an eye gouge on Richard Hibbard. Previous clashes between the two had also been feisty affairs. The first group stage clash in 2005 at Welford road saw a convincing 30-12 Leicester win, but was notable for allegations made by Ospreys star Gavin Henson that Leicester were cheating in the ruck area. The reverse fixture in Swansea the following weekend again went the Tigers' way with a late Dan Hipkiss try clinching the win. Again though, the game saw a number of flashpoints, resulting in suspensions for Gavin Henson and Ian Evans for-off-the ball incidents.
