Ospreys pin lock hopes on Powell
Ospreys lock Mike Powell
Powell could be a key early season player for the Ospreys
With Mike Powell to undergo shoulder surgery in the summer, the Ospreys could be left with no senior second rows at the start of the season.

Alun Wyn Jones, Ian Gough, Jon Thomas and Brent Cockbain are likely to be on World Cup duty, along with Ian Evans if he can prove his fitness in time.

Lyndon Bateman's long-standing shoulder injury is expected to keep him out for around the first month of the season.

"We hope Powell will be back in time," said Ospreys physio Brian Downey.

Evans is expected to be available after his serious shoulder injury in time for Wales' 4 August game with England at Twickenham, if required by the Wales management.

"Ian has progressed very well with his rehab and is back in light contact and fitness work," Downey told the South Wales Echo.

  • Ospreys three-quarter Tal Selley has been linked with a season-long loan to Cardiff Blues.
