Hook tinkering must stop - Davies
James Hook
Hook was played in three different positions against the Dragons
Former Wales captain Jonathan Davies says that the Ospreys must allow James Hook to settle into the fly-half spot.

The region have repeatedly switched the Wales starlet between fly-half and inside centre, and he was also moved to outside centre in the 12-6 Dragons win.

Davies, one of Wales' all-time great fly-halves, says that is bad for the region, for Wales, and for the player.

"If I was Hook I'd want to play at 10, stay at 10 and boss the game from 10," Davies told BBC Wales' Scrum V show.

Hook has to learn how to direct games at regional level so that he is ready for it on the international stage

Jonathan Davies

"It can be a nonsense switching people around, you have to have specialist players in the key decision-making positions and they must stick to their roles.

"Even in New Zealand where they play with a second five-eighth they don't swap roles during a game - there is a dedicated 10 and a dedicated 12.

"I know that when I was playing for Wales I wouldn't have been comfortable with it, and nor would Bleddyn Bowen who used to play at 12.

"We had outside-halves throughout our back line - with Mark Ring at outside centre and Tony Clement at full-back - but we stuck to our specific roles during games."

We have a long-range strategy for James [Hook] and Gavin [Henson]

Ospreys coach Lyn Jones

The Ospreys have said that they will continue to switch Hook and Gavin Henson during games, with outside-half Shaun Connor and centres Sonny Parker and Andrew Bishop also coming into the equation.

"We have a long-range strategy for James and Gavin, but we may have to push on with it earlier than expected," said Ospreys coach Lyn Jones after the Dragons game. "Both are gifted players and need to be on the field.

"We brought Connor on in the second-half against the Dragons for some old-fashioned values at number 10, but we couldn't take James off because he was pulling the defence apart so we moved him to 13."

But Davies believes that the strategy is confused and damaging to all parties.

"The Ospreys have looked very strong up front, but I've been disappointed with them behind," said Davies.

"If Connor was brought on to give the team direction from outside-half, what does that say about Hook's international hopes?

Hook has that special ability, so why keep moving him?

Ex-Wales captain Gwyn Jones

"He has to learn how to direct games in different circumstances at regional level so that he is ready for it on the international stage.

"That is why Stephen Jones is currently Wales' best outside-half, he's the best at directing games."

Another former Wales captain, Gwyn Jones, added: "Hook clearly has the ability to control and change games from outside-half as he showed when he came on for Wales against Australia.

"He has that special ability, so why keep moving him?

"The Ospreys need to build momentum and a pattern of play."
