Debut-making Justin Marshall helped inspire the Ospreys to victory in their only pre-season friendly fixture.

The All Black, 33, played a part in his side's two first-half tries from James Hook and Lee Byrne after James Richards opened the scoring for the visitors.

Marshall, Gavin Henson and Byrne were taken off at the break but Jon Vaughton extended the lead with a try after Haldane Luscombe spilled the ball.

Ugo Monye rounded off the try scoring with an impressive late consolation.

We have a lot of speed and that is the way I am sure we will be looking to play this season

Ospreys Filo Tiatia and Paul James plus Harlequins Steve So'oialo and Nicolas Spanghero were all sin-binned in a frequently stormy encounter at Swansea's Liberty Stadium.

Kiwi Tiatia was making his Ospreys debut along with Marshall, Byrne, Tal Selley and Nikki Walker.

Lions and Wales Grand Slam stars Brent Cockbain, Ryan Jones and Henson all impressed in the game, after seeing their 2005/6 seasons ravaged by injury.

James Hook also caught the eye at outside-half, the 21-year-old Wales international having moved up to the regional squad from Neath in the summer.

  • Ospreys scrum-half Justin Marshall:
  • "We are pleased with the performance, but a lot of the boys who came off like me after the first half felt as if they hadn't done that much.

"It was a bit of a dogfight with lot of mistakes and turnovers, but we are pleased with the win because Harlequins are a good side.

"When we did get the ball wide we showed we have a lot of speed out there and that is the way I am sure we will be looking to play this season.

"But that was difficult to do in wet weather conditions and we are just glad to have come out on top."
