Falcons future is safe - Thompson

Newcastle

Newcastle Falcons chairman Dave Thompson has played down reports the club was in danger of being wound up over an unpaid National Insurance bill.

HM Revenue and Customs froze the club's accounts while the petition was sought but Thompson explained the situation was now under control.

"We were late in payment," he told the Northern Echo.

"But the money transferred on Monday and Customs are withdrawing the petition today."

Falcons are former winners of the Premiership, and currently lie eighth in the championship table after five matches.
