Burke scored 26 tries in 81 games for Falcons between 2004 and 2008 |
Former Newcastle Falcons and Australia full-back Matt Burke has joined the coaching staff of Super 14 side New South Wales Waratahs. The 35-year-old, who retired at the end of last season, will be the Waratahs' kicking coach in 2009. Burke is returning to his roots as he is the highest ever point scorer for the Waratahs, and scored 878 points in 81 Tests for the Wallabies. Burke spent four seasons at Kingston Park before retiring through injury. The Australian said he was delighted to be returning to the Waratahs in an off-field capacity. "It's good to be back and I'm really happy to be involved with Chris Hickey and his coaching team," said Burke. "We'll be working out a schedule over the next few weeks to target the sessions that I'll be involved in and I'm looking forward to not only offering kicking advice but some tactical assistance to the outside backs in particular." Earlier this week, the Waratahs also announced current Wallabies assistant Michael Foley would join their coaching panel for 2009. After reaching the Super 14 final this year, Hickey said the Waratahs would be a better side for the addition of Burke to the off-field team. "Kicking, whether it be for points, territory or tactical reasons, needs to be practised, and I can't think of many better in the field than Matt Burke," Hickey said. "Matt's one of the greatest players ever to pull on a Waratahs jersey so he'll command a huge amount of respect amongst the playing squad. "He's also got a great aptitude for passing on his knowledge and I think he'll make a fine kicking coach for NSW. "Matt will bring a great deal to the Waratahs both on and off the field."
