Winter made 10 starts for the Falcons last season |
Newcastle Falcons have tied former South Africa 'A' captain Russell Winter to a new one-year deal with the club. The experienced back-rower has made 24 appearances for the Falcons since joining in December 2006, and has been captain of the side in that time. "Russell's decision to stay is a massive boost for us," said Newcastle director of rugby Steve Bates. "As well as being an abrasive presence and an experienced head, his leadership qualities have proved outstanding." Initially signed as cover for the injured Phil Dowson, Winter has eased himself into the set-up at Kingston Park and Bates is delighted with his progress. "In the year-and-a-half he has been with the club Russell has settled superbly," Bates said. | I have been honoured to represent the people of Newcastle during my time here Falcons back-row Russell Winter |
"He is really enjoying being in the North East and feels passionately about buying in to the culture that we are building here within the squad." Supporters have taken to the combative Springbok for his fearless style and Winter himself has appreciated their welcome. "I have been honoured to represent the people of Newcastle during my time here so far, and when the chance came up to extend that for another year my mind was made up straightaway," he said. "I feel privileged to be involved with this group of people, the bond we have with our very loyal supporters, and I just can't wait for the new season to start."
