Fletcher was selected for England A in 1993 |
Newcastle have named John Fletcher as their new director of rugby after Rob Andrew's departure from the Falcons. Andrew is the RFU's new elite director of rugby, allowing Fletcher, 35, to step into his shoes at Kingston Park.
The ex-Northampton, Newcastle Gosforth and England A centre has had five years with the Falcons academy and has been taking first-team pre-season training.
"It's a huge honour, and I'm determined to build on the firm foundations we have at Newcastle," said Fletcher.
"We are fortunate enough to have some of the best young talent in the country here right now, combined with world class international players.
"The aim has to be to get us competing regularly for silverware."
Peter Walton remains as forwards coach, with fitness and conditioning coach Steve Black and strength conditioning coach Bob Morton retaining their posts.

Ian Peel will be acting academy manager while the club advertises for a full-time successor for Fletcher.
In his tenure as academy manager Fletcher has helped bring through the likes of Mathew Tait, Toby Flood and Geoff Parling.
Falcons chairman Dave Thompson said: "I've worked very closely with John during his time as academy manager, and have known him for some 13 years within Northumberland rugby.
"I have watched with admiration as he has continually brought through a stream of top quality young players in to the first team squad.
"Having seen his qualities first hand, he was always going to be the long-term successor to Rob."
"The focus has to be taking the Falcons on to the next stage of our development, and I know John is the right man to lead us there.
"He has the full confidence of the playing and coaching staff, and with support from senior players such as Matt Burke I'm certain we will progress under his stewardship."
