Keith Earls touches down for a Munster try |
Munster boosted their chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Heineken Cup by securing a bonus-point win over Treviso in Pool One. Denis Hurley, Keith Earls, Donncha O'Callaghan and Paul Warwick scored first-half tries and Ronan O'Gara added two penalties and two conversions. Alessandro Zanni scored a try which Marius Goosen converted to leave Treviso trailing 30-7 at the interval. Earls and Donnacha Ryan scored second-half tries which were both converted. Goosen was off-target with a second-minute penalty attempt after Warwick was penalised for holding onto the ball at Stadio Comunale di Monigo. Two minutes later, Hurley raced over for a try in the corner after accepting a pass from Paul O'Connell, following a good run by Earls. O'Gara missed the conversion. Earls touched down on the other side of the pitch for the Irish province's second try in the seventh minute, receiving a pass from Doug Howlett who showed speed and power before feeding the ball to his midfield partner. O'Gara again failed to convert but managed to add the two points from in front of the posts after O'Callaghan completed a fine, flowing move set up by a surging Earls run for Munster's third try on 11 minutes. Fly-half O'Gara then knocked over a 25-metre penalty but flanker Zanni scored just to the right of the posts, with Goosen kicking the conversion to reduce Treviso's deficit to 20-7. O'Gara was successful with another penalty effort in the 29th minute after Treviso infringed at a ruck. Warwick secured a bonus point by scoring his side's fourth try, making a break from halfway, then chipping ahead and collecting his own chip to score under the posts. O'Gara's conversion made the score 30-7 at the interval. The third quarter of the game was scoreless but Earls scored his second try of the game in the 63rd minute, crossing the Treviso line after accepting an offload from Jean de Villiers who had run through two attempted tackles. O'Gara kicked his third conversion of the game and then Damien Varley thought he had scored his first Heineken Cup try but was ruled to have knocked on over the line. Ryan made it six tries for Munster when he scored in the final minute, Warwick adding the conversion this time. Lifeimi Mafi took a pass from Howlett, James Coughlan kept the ball alive, and he passed to de Villiers, who in turn fed Ryan to score.
