Andy Powell to sign new London Wasps contract

Wales back-rower Andy Powell is set to sign a new two-year contract with Wasps keeping him at the club until the end of the 2012/13 season.

Powell was released by Cardiff Blues in 2010 and accepted a one-year deal with the Premiership club.

"I'm going to sign another two years this week, so hopefully it will all be done and dusted," 29-year-old Powell told BBC Sport Wales.

"I'm happy with the club and hopefully [will] now put pen to paper."

Powell says he is settled at Wasps and is looking forward to the next two seasons.

"[Wasps] have good people around the club and, especially with the individuals they have got there, it's a real friendly place," he said.

"Definitely looking forward to it."

Powell is hoping to be included in Wales' 22-man squad for the Six Nations clash against Ireland at the Millennium Stadium on 12 March after recovering from a shoulder injury.

That injury forced him off in the opening Six Nations defeat by England on 4 February.

He came through his comeback game for Wasps against Saracens last Saturday and hopes to further prove his fitness to Wales coach Warren Gatland in the match against Sale Sharks on 6 March.

Powell was released by the Blues with a year left on his contract.

Blues coach David Young said that both parties felt it was in their best interests if they parted company.

That came after Powell was arrested for, and later admitted to, driving a golf buggy on the M4 motorway while drunk following Wales' victory over Scotland in the 2010 Six Nations Championship.

Powell made his Wales debut against South Africa in 2008. That followed a nomadic career in which he had played for Newport, Leicester, Beziers and the Scarlets before joining the Blues in 2005.

He made a huge impact in his first international season, winning a place on the 2009 British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa.
