Wasps ban Dallaglio after citing

Lawrence Dallaglio
Dallaglio will retire from the sport at the end of the season

Former England captain Lawrence Dallaglio has been banned for a week by Wasps after he was cited for an alleged punch on Leicester's Julian White.

The incident is said to have happened during the closing stages of Wasps' loss in the EDF Energy Cup semi-final.

The 35-year-old faces a Rugby Football Union hearing on Tuesday and could be banned for up to eight weeks.

However, Wasps have already moved to administer their own punishment on their club captain.

Wasps say the former England captain's club ban took effect two days ago, and that they are satisfied there was no intention or malice on Dallaglio's part in the incident.

However, the club and player both admitted his actions did infringe the relevant International Rugby Board rule.

Dallaglio, who has never before been cited in an 18-year career, said: "I accept the sanction of a week's suspension from playing for my club.

"I acknowledge that my actions infringed the rules, although I wish to stress that they were unintentional and without any malice.

"I have extended my apologies to Julian White.

"I hope that I can now draw a line under this incident and enjoy playing out the rest of my final season."

Dallaglio will retire from all rugby next month following a glittering career that saw him help England win the 2003 World Cup.

Wasps have been knocked out of the Heineken Cup and the EDF Energy Cup, but are still chasing a place in the end-of-season Premiership play-offs.

The club's final game of the regular season is against Leeds on 10 May, while the play-off semi-finals and final are on the 17 and 31 May.
