London Irish captain Bob Casey is close to signing a new contract with the club, according to director of rugby Brian Smith. Casey joined the Exiles from Leinster in 2002 and has made 144 appearances, scoring five tries.
"We're a long way down the track with the negotiations with our captain," Smith told BBC Berkshire.
Smith also said Irish have signed two English-qualified players, but refused to reveal their names for now.
"We have signed two new players who you'll hear about as soon as all the ink's dry on the paperwork. We've agreed terms with two very talented English-qualified players which we're excited about for next season.
"We're talking to the board about resources perhaps to look at a couple of big names to come in. It's still a bit of a work in progress."
Last week Irish announced that Nils Mordt will leave the club at the end of the season, and Smith said he was sorry to see him go:
"Mike Catt and I are disappointed he's going, but completely understand it, particularly when Northampton are paying twice as much as anyone else in the market at the moment."
