Stuart Gallacher is delighted with the Barbarians match |
The Scarlets are to play the Barbarians to mark the official opening of Parc y Scarlets early next year. The Baa-Baas have pledged to bring a star-studded team to the 23m, 15,000 capacity new stadium on 31 January. "We wanted to host a showcase match to mark the start of a new chapter in our history," said Scarlets chief executive Stuart Gallacher. "We are absolutely delighted that the Barbarians have agreed to this fixture." Added Gallacher: "It should be a thrilling match. We are hoping for a mix of some of the world's top rugby players from both northern and southern hemispheres in what should be a great game of rugby and a memorable occasion. "We believe this will be a fitting way to celebrate our new home and to bring something extra special to our supporters and members this season." The Barbarians have confirmed their 22-man squad, which will be announced in December, will be coached by Kingsley Jones. Barbarians' president Micky Steele-Bodger said: "The great figures of Llanelli rugby have had close associations with the Barbarians for many years. "R H Williams and Phil Bennett still hold the record for the most Baa-Baas' appearances by a Welshmen while Derek Quinnell is a former captain of distinction who now serves on our committee." Parc y Scarlets becomes the Scarlets' new home in mid-November. The first game at the stadium will be held on 15 November when Llanelli RFC play Cardiff. The Scarlets' first game at Parc y Scarlets will be against Munster in the Magners League on 28 November, followed by the Heineken Cup clash with Ulster on 12 December.
