Report: BBC Wales Today The Welsh Rugby Union and the Llanelli Scarlets are considering their options over the future of the Union's Head of Rugby Development, Nigel Davies. There is speculation that Davies will take up the role of Scarlets head coach following the sacking of Director of Rugby Phil Davies on Wednesday. Nigel Davies was assistant Wales coach to Gareth Jenkins from 2006 to 2007. Rumours persist that long-time Scarlets coach Jenkins could also return to the region as Elite Performance Director. | 606: DEBATE |
Paul Moriarty has taken temporary control of team matters, supported by Robert Jones and Wayne Proctor. Llanelli-born Nigel Davies, 43, won 29 caps at centre between 1988 and 1997, captaining his country against France in 1996. After a highly successful playing career at Llanelli, he retired after losing the Swalec Cup final to Swansea in 1999, joining Jenkins' back-room team at Stradey and then with Wales. When Jenkins was sacked after last year's World Cup, Davies took over as caretaker coach for the defeat to South Africa. | Whether or not Nigel Davies is capable of becoming a head coach is questionable Ex-Llanelli and Wales flanker Emyr Lewis |
With Warren Gatland taking over as Wales coach, the WRU made Davies Head of Rugby Development in January, Group Chief Executive Roger Lewis calling him one of their key triumvirate alongside Gatland and Elite Performance Director Graeme Maw. Former Wales and Llanelli flanker Emyr Lewis says he is unconvinced that Nigel Davies is the right man for the Scarlets job. "Whether or not he is capable of becoming a head coach is questionable," Lewis told BBC Radio Wales. "The region and its fans expect results and will demand a big name as head coach. "Things have to improve. There's a lot of youth coming through and this season was shocking."
