Up to 450 homes could be built on Llanelli's Stradey Park ground |
Llanelli Scarlets are facing a second public inquiry in their bid for a housing development at Stradey Park. The plan for up to 450 homes, designed to finance the move to a new 13,500 capacity stadium on the other side of town, has met objection from locals.
Residents have applied to Carmarthen Council to have the Scarlets' training area classed as village green.
The Scarlets' legal case claims rugby was the land's primary use and was only used by others with their permission.
Residents claim they have used the land for decades and if it was given village green status, it would mean the site has a community use which should prevent it being built upon.
Both sides of the argument have been presented to the council who could decide on a public inquiry, perhaps by the end of the week.

The Scarlets first unveiled plans to move to a new 15m stadium, jointly financed with Carmarthenshire Council, in 2004.
But just as the housing plans were due to go before councillors last summer, they were called in by the Welsh Assembly Government and a public inquiry was held in the town earlier this year.
Some residents living near Stradey claimed houses on such a scale would cause traffic problems, the loss of green spaces and possibly flooding.
The club told the hearing that without the move to the new stadium it would cease to exist, and they were given the go-ahead in June.
However, a new inquiry is unlikely to need Welsh Assembly intervention and a final decision should be made by the end of September.
