Llanelli Scarlets claimed their first ever win at Leinster with an inspired second-half show at the RDS Showground.

Jon Edwards, twice, James Bater and Regan King all crossed in a 10-minute spell that belied a tight first period, with Morgan Stoddart also scoring late.

The Welsh had led just 16-11 at the break through a Matthew Watkins try and the boot of fly-half Rhys Priestland.

Leinster claimed tries from Christian Warner, Stan Wright and Jamie Heaslip but still fell far short.

Watkins gave the Scarlets a perfect start as the wing raced over after three minutes, courtesy of a flowing move down the left and an inside pass from King.

Priestland added the extras, but Leinster replied within 60 seconds as Warner took advantage of some poor tackling to barge through for an unconverted try.

Leinster fly-half Jonathan Sexton had no better luck with a penalty kick soon after, although opposite number Priestland had no such problems with a simple chance on 13 minutes.

Another miss from Sexton, albeit a kick to nothing from almost the halfway line, was followed at last by his first success to bring Leinster back to just 8-10 behind.

But a second penalty from Priestland restored the visitors' five-point advantage.

We've got to be hard on ourselves and not accept that kind of performance

Leinster coach Michael Cheika

A superb chip and gather from Fergus McFadden nearly led to a second try for Leinster, only for some fine scrambling defence by the Scarlets to repel the danger.

Leinster instead had to settle for a penalty from Sexton, who was now finding his range, but Priestland replied again in kind for the Welsh side to lead 16-11 on 32 minutes.

That lead looked under threat given the huge advantage in possession that Leinster were enjoying, and even more fragile when Scarlets lock Vernon Cooper was sin-binned by referee James Jones for killing the ball.

But Scarlets survived until half-time and soon after the restart were back up to full strength and running riot.

First Bater sold Rob Kearney an outrageous dummy to go under the posts for a seven-pointer.

Then a clean break from Garan Evans seemed to have sent Edwards to the line, only for a handful of blue shirts to get back to haul the back-row down just short.

But Kearney cynically went offside to prevent quick release, the full-back earning a yellow card and Priestland kicking the resulting penalty.

Three more tries then followed in a five-minute burst as Leinster's defence was ripped to pieces.

Edwards, outstanding in his support play, was on hand to claim two of them, book-ending one under the posts from King that secured a bonus point after a fine run by Stoddart.

In amongst that turmoil, Leinster flanker Shane Jennings was sent to the sin-bin after venting his frustration at the referee with an ill-judged expletive.

With a quarter of the match still to go the result was already beyond doubt as the Scarlets now held a huge 45-11 lead.

Another sin-binning, Scarlets back-row Bater this time trespassing the laws, gave the Leinster pack enough edge to shunt replacement prop Wright over.

Forward power again paid dividends for the home side as Heaslip carried over from the base of a scrum.

The sniff of a bonus point for a fourth try gave Leinster extra urgency.

But instead the Scarlets had the last word as full-back Stoddart went over late on for the Welsh side's sixth try.

  • Leinster coach Michael Cheika:
  • "We want to always play well for our fans and no-one hurts more than me when we don't perform.

"You've got to take your opportunities and our penalty count was high. We were ill-disciplined and we've got to turn it around now because we've got some big matches coming up.

"We failed to control the game and we've just effectively thrown away that good away win last week, so that means that we've got to win in Glasgow next week.

"We've lost our home record, albeit against a good team who played the game with width... but we've got to be hard on ourselves and not accept that kind of performance."

  • Scarlets man-of-the-match Jon Edwards:
  • "I've been waiting for my chance and was just pleased to start, but it was a memorable game.

"Leinster is a difficult place to come, so to score 50 points and play like that is superb.

"It's Ulster next week, so fingers crossed I will be involved again and we can come away with another result."
