Cockerilll has steered Tigers into the Heineken Cup semi-finals

Leicester Tigers stand-in coach Richard Cockerill says that, in principle, he is the club's new permanent head coach, BBC Radio Leicester reports.

Cockerill has been filling in since the departure of Heyneke Meyer due to a family illness in January.

"I suppose in principle [I am the head coach] but there's a few things to deal with first," he said.

"We're still discussing some of the issues around that at the moment so I can't really say anything more."

Cockerill added: "At the moment I'm not really in a position to say that because there's nothing that's concrete."

Cockerill played for the Tigers over two spells, including 10 years at the club from 1992 to 2002.

The 38-year-old former hooker, capped 27 times by England, is in his second spell as acting head coach.
