Marcelo Loffreda arrived from Argentina in November |
Leicester have sacked head coach Marcelo Loffreda after only one season in charge. Loffreda moved to Welford Road after guiding Argentina to third place at the World Cup in France last October. But despite reaching the Premiership final, Leicester held an end-of-season review after a trophyless campaign. "We have taken this action in the best interests of the club and felt this decision had to be made now," said chairman Peter Tom. "The board of Leicester Tigers has come to this decision after conducting its review of the playing season and in assessing what we believe is required to achieve the club's aspirations for the future," added Tom. | 606: DEBATE | "Marcelo arrived at Leicester Tigers in 2007 after leading Argentina to third place in the Rugby World Cup, and our decision has been taken with a degree of sadness. "On behalf of the club, the board would like to wish Marcelo and his family well for the future." Tom said no decision had been made on Loffreda's successor but an appointment was expected to be made by the start of pre-season training. Loffreda arrived from Argentina in November after seven years in charge of his country but presided over what was regarded as one of the club's worst seasons in the professional era. He took the reins of a team which in the 2006/07 season had won the Guinness Premiership and EDF Cup - and were runners-up in the Heineken Cup. But last season Leicester lost both the Premiership and EDF Cup finals and were knocked out of the Heineken Cup in the group stages.
