Gloucester lock Alex Brown will undergo surgery on Tuesday to stabilise a hairline fracture in his jaw, picked up in Saturday's defeat at Harlequins. He will have a plate inserted into the left side of his jaw, and expects to be out of action for three or four weeks.
"It is a significant blow not to have a player of his calibre about," said Gloucester's head coach Dean Ryan.
"We took advice before deciding on the course of action and believe this is the best for everyone involved."
Brown, who has two England caps, has made 17 appearances in all competitions this season for the Cherry and Whites.
The 28-year-old had only been back in the Gloucester side for two matches following a fractured arm, picked up against Ospreys in January.
"We have operated without his influence before this season," added Ryan.
"He showed when he recovered from his fractured arm that he is able to return very quickly, and we naturally hope this injury is the same."
