Gloucester lock Marco Bortolami should be fit for the second half of Italy's Six Nations campaign after learning he does not require an eye operation. Bortolami will not need surgery on a double fracture of the left eye socket and will be out for a month rather than the six weeks that had been expected.
The former Azzurri captain will miss Italy's opening games against Ireland in Dublin and England in Rome.
But he could be fit for the Six Nations clash with Wales on 23 February.
"[Bortolami] will be able to return completely to rugby activity from the second half of February," said the the Italian Rugby Federation.
The 27-year-old suffered the injury during Gloucester's 29-21 win over Ulster in the Heineken Cup on Sunday.
