Moffat believes his players' eagerness led to first-half mistakes
Rob Moffat has called on his Edinburgh players to carry the second-half performance against Leinster on to their forthcoming matches. The Murrayfield side beat the Irish 32-24 to register their first Magners League victory of the season. "This is a very tight league; it's over 22 games. We've got to show some real consistency. If we do that, results will come," said Moffat. "We've got to kick on for Aironi next week in Italy and the next few games." An inspired display by David Blair, who replaced the injured Phil Godman, helped Edinburgh to victory and will do much to lift the mood in the capital side. After the match, which Leinster ended strongly, Moffat told BBC Scotland: "It was a much better performance. I thought for 20-25 minutes in the second half we played some cracking rugby. "We have scored four tries and got a bonus point, which is good, but nobody in our group will get carried away at all. | If Leinster had got a bonus point from the conversion on the touchline at the end of the game I would have been really annoyed Edinburgh coach Rob Moffat |
"If you put in the performance, the wins will come." Edinburgh had lost their opening trio of Magners League matches this season, against Cardiff, Munster and Ulster, yet had shown flashes of good form in those defeats. "In the first three games we have played patches of good rugby," said Moffat. "Tonight we still had a bit of that. "In the first half we gave away too many penalties under no pressure and we've got to cut that out. We looked a bit edgy. "I think tonight we were over-eager. Everybody in this group was determined to get a better performance." A first-half try by Geoff Cross was followed by one each from Tim Visser, David Blair and Mark Robertson in the second period as the Scots pressed the visitors deep into their 22. At one point Edinburgh led 32-12, but Leinster fought back and scored late tries through Jamie Heaslip and Rob Kearney. Though they never looked like losing the match, Moffat was unhappy at the way his team ended an otherwise excellent second half. Leinster's failure to kick a conversion in added time scuppered their chance to leave Murrayfield with a bonus point. He said: "If Leinster had got a bonus point from the conversion on the touchline at the end of the game I would have been really annoyed because that shouldn't have happened. "Nothing against Leinster, but I'm glad they missed it - that was very important. "What we've got to do in games where we're not playing well away from home or whatever, is try to get that bonus point because points matter at the end of the day."
