Edinburgh club captain Simon Cross is to retire at the end of the season because of persistent knee injuries.

The 29-year-old flank forward has been with Edinburgh for eight years.

Cross now hopes to pursue a career in coaching, having been involved in that capacity with Penicuik and Murrayfield Wanderers on a part-time basis.

Edinburgh head coach Rob Moffat paid tribute, saying: "Simon has been an influential figure in the club and, in many ways, a model professional."

The player, who made 92 appearances for Edinburgh, said: "My life has been in rugby and I've loved the time I have spent at Edinburgh. I've been very proud to be part of the Edinburgh team.

"I could not contemplate walking away and not putting anything back into it. I hope coaching will be my passion now."
