The 12,534 attendance was a record home crowd for the Edinburgh outfit |
Edinburgh hope to entice more fans to games after setting a record home crowd in the 39-6 Magners League win over Glasgow Warriors on Boxing Day. Chief executive Nic Cartwright said Edinburgh's 12,534 crowd was largely thanks to Scottish Rugby's autumn Test ticket redemption scheme. It enabled fans to claim a ticket if they attended Scotland matches against New Zealand, South Africa or Canada. "Friday's match had a memorable atmosphere," said Cartwright. He said the club aimed to get more fans through the turnstiles and he hoped a large number of Edinburgh fans would travel to Firhill for the second leg of the David Lloyd 1872 Cup against Glasgow on Friday. | Hopefully the neutrals bought into what professional rugby is all about in this country Edinburgh chief executive Nic Cartwright |
Warriors are hoping to set a new home record crowd of their own at Firhill - which stands at 5,213 - when they host Edinburgh in the 2 January game. After six matches, Edinburgh's average home crowd this season is 6,064 - which is an increase of about 4,000 on the same stage last term. "In successive home matches, Edinburgh have set new attendance records in both the Heineken Cup (7,711) and the Magners League, which is really encouraging," said Cartwright. "Friday's match proved to be an entertaining spectacle, with four tries and a memorable atmosphere generated by both sets of supporters. "Hopefully the neutrals who were potentially attending their first-ever Magners League match bought into what professional rugby is all about in this country. "Now we will be engaging with them again even further to ensure they become regulars either at Edinburgh or Glasgow Warriors in the future."
