Shanklin tells of huge Lions disappointment

Injury victim Tom Shanklin expects his Lions tour place to be filled by Ireland's Gordon D'Arcy or England veteran Mike Tindall.

Cardiff Blues centre Shanklin has been ruled out of the South Africa tour by a shoulder dislocation suffered against Newport Gwent Dragons on Wednesday.

He said: "If they are going to pick another centre, I think it's between Mike Tindall and Gordon D'Arcy."

Shanklin added Lions boss Ian McGeechan may instead take a third fly-half.

"Whether they are now going to take a look at taking another fly-half or what I just don't know," said former London Welsh and Saracens player Shanklin, who joined Munster scrum-half Tomas O'Leary as a pre-tour casualty."

He added: "It's a difficult thing for them naming the 37-man squad and now they have to name two more so it's not something I've really thought about too much."

Shanklin has also revealed his huge disappointment at being ruled out of the Lions tour.

He said: "There's no chance I can really go on tour so it was pretty black and white. I needed an op."

The Wales and Cardiff Blues centre suffered the injury in his side's 26-12 Magners League win.

Shanklin added: "I sort of realised... the night of the game [and] the following morning that it wasn't looking great for me and then it [a scan] sort of just confirmed what I really thought.

"And I'm desperately disappointed. It happened four years ago for the New Zealand tour.

"I was injured [knee]..., but I managed to make the tour and I played a few games then and broke down again with an injury and then that injury with my knee put me out for the following season."

Shanklin was injured in a tackle six minutes from time

Shanklin, 29, won a 2009 Lions call-up following a superb Six Nations that he only played in regularly because of an injury to Gavin Henson, as Wales coach Warren Gatland had wanted to play his first-choice centre partnership of Henson and Jamie Roberts.

The experienced 63-cap Welshman has also been integral part of a hugely successful season for the Blues as coach Dai Young's men won the EDF Energy Cup crown and reached the Heineken Cup semi-finals.

Ireland's Alan Quinlan will find out on Wednesday if he will miss the tour when he goes before a disciplinary panel on eye-gouging charges.

Lions coach Ian McGeechan has said he will take his time before naming replacements, though the party leave for South Africa on 24 May.
