Andy Powell tussles with Mike Tindall at the Millennium Stadium |
Cardiff Blues number eight Andy Powell is hoping his man-of-the-match display against Heineken Cup rivals Gloucester will help earn him a Wales call-up. On Tuesday, Wales coach Warren Gatland names his squad for the autumn Tests. Uncapped Powell, 27, was the star of the Blues' 37-24 win over Gloucester, and he said: "If the call-up comes I'll have to work even harder. "We'll have to wait until Tuesday and hopefully I'll get the call-up. It would be good to be part of the squad." He added: "My priority this season was getting my place in the Blues squad. Everything's been going well so far and I'm enjoying my rugby. | 606: DEBATE | "I've had a few bad years and probably been hot and cold at times. "I think it's about time I pulled it out of the bag and been consistent. That's something I've looked at and worked on. "Things have been going well for me." Powell thanked the Blues' front five for setting up the four-tries-to-three win against Dean Ryan's side that puts the Welsh side in pole position in Pool Six. "It was a great game and everyone played well," said Powell. "We needed that result. In recent years we've chucked it away and it was great that the boys stuck on and got the result. "At one point it could have gone either way, but the boys were strong and we really dug in and got it. "Nicky (Robinson) played territory very well and put them back down in their half and the forwards built a good platform for Halfpenny and the boys to get the tries. "But it was down to the front-five. They worked hard against Gloucester to give me that platform and that's been the icing on the cake for me. "We need to build on this and keep working. We can't slip back on this. We have to keep working."
