Blues flanker Martyn Williams injured his left ankle |
Martyn Williams has eased Wales coach Warren Gatland's worries, aiming to be fit for Cardiff Blues' opening Heineken Cup clash at Calvisano on 11 October. The veteran flanker limped off during the Blues' 16-15 Magners League win over Ulster at the Arms Park on Friday. A statement on the Blues website read: "We can confirm the injury is not as serious as first thought. "Martyn aims to be and fit for the first round of Heineken Cup matches on the 11 October." The statement added: "Martyn has torn a ligament on the inside of his left ankle but no operation is needed to repair the injury." Gatland persuaded 33-year-old Williams to come out of international retirement last January ahead of the Six Nations Championship. Wales reconvene in November for Tests against South Africa, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, and Gatland will not want to be without his inspirational open-side. The Blues also lost try scorer Leigh Halfpenny who was carried off after taking a knock.
