Sowden-Taylor grimaces as his ankle is caught beneath him |
Cardiff Blues will be without Robin Sowden-Taylor for six to eight months after the back-row broke his ankle in Wednesday's loss at the Ospreys. The 24-year-old fell awkwardly jumping for a high ball near the end of the game and had to be stretchered off.
Blues backs coach Rob Howley said: "Robin's injury is a total dislocation of the ankle and a fracture.
"He's going to be out for several months and our thoughts are with him because it's a cruel blow."
Sowden-Taylor had only been on the field at the Liberty Stadium a matter of minutes, replacing Wales and Lions open-side Martyn Williams.
On top of the 18-16 defeat, Sowden-Taylor's injury will be a huge blow for Blues director of rugby Dai Young.
Sowden-Taylor is one of the rising stars at the Arms Park, he has won three caps and he would have been a contender for new Wales coach Gareth Jenkins' autumn Test squad.
Howley added: "Robin has got huge character and he'll come back from this injury."
The injury to Sowden-Taylor was one of three serious accidents in Welsh rugby on 13 September.
Scarlets prop Huw Gustafson broke his leg in their Regional Under-20 Championship match against the Blues.
The night's other Under-20 encounter was abandoned when Ospreys lock Richard Kelly also suffered a broken leg against the Dragons.
