Ireland omit five Ulster players

Five Ulster players have been dropped from the Ireland squad for their August training camp in Limerick.

Isaac Boss, Ryan Caldwell, Darren Cave, Chris Henry and Niall O'Connor attended last month's training camp in Belfast.

However, they are among those who have made way for the Irish contingent which toured with the Lions in South Africa, along with some English-based players.

"This allows us to set some foundations for the coming season," said Ireland coach Declan Kidney.

"The Belfast camp was productive in that we were able to continue to work with the players and pick up where we left off from the summer tour and the Churchill Cup.

"A lot of players are being given an opportunity and from that point of view as well, we were happy with the spread of players we were in contact with in Belfast.

"The next camp will be slightly different as the players involved with the Lions tour come back into the fold."

Thirteen Irish players - including replacements Gordon D'Arcy and John Hayes - featured on the Lions tour, while two more - Tomas O'Leary and Jerry Flannery - were forced to withdraw from the original squad because of injury.

The Ireland training camp will be held from 16-19 August in Limerick.
