Shane Jenning celebrates Leinster's Magners League triumph |
Leinster: (20) 41 Tries: le Roux 2, Horgan, Jennings, Whitaker, Jowitt Cons: Contepomi 4 Pens: Contepomi
Dragons: (3) 8 Try: Black Pens: Sweeney Leinster clinched the Magners League with a thumping win over the Dragons. Ollie le Roux marked his final outing for Leinster before his return to South Africa by notching two early tries. Ceri Sweeney replied with a Dragons penalty but Brian O'Driscoll released Shane Horgan to score another Leinster try as they led 20-3 at the interval. Shane Jennings, Chris Whitaker and Cameron Jowitt added further Leinster tries at the RDS although Adam Black replied with a late Dragons score. Prop le Roux seemed determined to enjoy his final outing for the Irish province and he barged over for his first try in the fourth minute after taking a quick tap penalty following Leinster pressure. The burly South African did it again five minutes later when he broke through some more weak Dragons tackling and got the ball down. Sweeney replied with a Dragons penalty two minutes later and there followed a lull in the scoring as a number of over-ambitious Leinster moves broke down. However, Leinster were back in the groove on 33 minutes when O'Driscoll's superb off-load enabled Horgan to score. | 606: DEBATE |
Five more Felipe Contepomi points left Leinster 20-3 ahead at the break and the title was already in the bag. Predictably, the talented Leinster side cut loose after the break with Contepomi's superb angle setting up Jennings for a simple finish on 44 minutes. Heaslip's 60-metre run set up Whitaker's close-range finish for Leinster's fifth try and a turnover in their own 22 culminated with Jowitt notching another touchdown just after the hour. Keith Gleeson, playing his final home match for Leinster before his retirement, received a rousing farewell from the large home crowd as he was replaced with 12 minutes to go. The popular le Roux was also afforded similar treatment as he departed the fray early. O'Driscoll looked to have scored one of those classic individual tries which used to be his stock-in-trade but he failed to get the ball down after storming over the Dragons line. As Leinster slackened, Adam Black poached a late Dragons try but it did little to dampen the mood of jubiliation at the RDS.
Leinster coach Michael Cheika: "This title is very important for us. We've worked very hard to have success and that's what every sportsman wants. "It's a culmination of three hard years." Leinster captain Brian O'Driscoll:
"We've been close the last few years but no cigar so we'll go in and smoke a few cigars in the dressing-room now! "Ollie (le Roux) was out doing his own thing but thankfully they were two great decisions and he got the tries. "This title is a stepping-stone hopefully. Now we want to go out and chase the big one in Europe."
