David Humphreys kicked 12 points in the win over Borders |
David Humphreys believes Ulster have every right to go into the Heineken Cup campaign with confidence. The province made it five wins out of six in the Celtic League when they beat Borders 27-0 away on Saturday.
"Every year when the Heineken Cup comes around you go into it with huge optimism, but this year more than ever," said the experienced fly-half.
"There is an unbelievable determination in this side. Europe is a step-up but I think we can do well."
Ulster start their Pool Four programme against Treviso at Ravenhill on Friday (1930 BST) in front of an anticipated full house. Their other opponents are Biarritz and Saracens.
Despite some memorable home wins in front of their Belfast fans, Ulster have not made it out of the pool stage since they won the European competition in 1999.
But Humphreys is relishing the challenge, believing Ulster are better placed to make an impact this time.
"I do not know what the difference is between last year and this, but if we play well we will trouble most teams we play against," added the 69-times capped Humphreys.
"If you look at any successful team, key elements are spirit and commitment. People want to be in the Ulster team right now."
Kieran Campbell is the only major worry for Ulster coach Mark McCall.
The in-form scrum-half damaged his calf muscle and he is due to have a scan on Monday to ascertain the full extent of the injury.
Replacement hooker Paul Shields will have have a scan on a knee injury picked up near the end of the game.
