Wood is hoping to be ready to play in the World Cup |
Keith Wood, Brian O'Driscoll, Anthony Foley, Shane Horgan and David Wallace are back in the Ireland squad after missing the summer rour to Australia, Tonga and Samoa.
They are included in the squad of 22 for the World Cup warm-up match against Wales at Lansdowne Road on Saturday 16 August.
The team and replacements will be announced on Tuesday.
Coach Eddie O'Sullivan has been putting his players through their paces at a training camp in Athlone.
He plans to rotate his squad in the World Cup build-up games against Wales, Italy and Scotland.
Wood, who has not played international rugby since September 2002 because of neck and shoulder injuries, believes he is ready to return.
"I always felt I would play again," said Wood.
"I never really had any doubt about that. My main concern now is getting back to full match fitness.
"I need four or five games and I hope to get a couple of those with Munster in the Celtic League."
David Wallace is back in the squad after a long-term lay-off with a shoulder injury.
Ierland's World Cup squad is due to be announced on 7 September.
