REACTION TO 23-6 WIN OVER WELLINGTON
2323 BST: David, Wellington
I was at the match at against Wellington. What a great occasion at the stadium, but the game was appalling. Players should not complain about the conditions. After all, Rugby is a winter game often played in worse weather than Wellington turned on. The Lions defensive lines were very good and their commitment, albeit in large numbers at ruck & maul time was good, but their poor use of the ball and field position must give the ABs plenty of confidence. It was sad to see Jonny as just a shadow of his former self. Sure he is rusty, and therefore was so diffident at times, after so long away from the international game, but his passing suggests that his injury is still hampering him. On the basis of this game, I would still not give the Lions a chance of winning the Test series.
1853 BST: Kev, London
Too many players playing their first game, backs with no cohesion. Unless the same team plays again on Saturday how are they going to gel? We can still win this, but we need to see Back, Henson, Robinson et al playing together. Two-one to the Lions.
1746 BST: Dan, London:
Jason from London - until the IRB change the rules, points from kicks will be valid ways to win games. I remember the Aussies whinging like jessies about this when England toured in 2003 - and ironically ending up with a lower try count.
1708 BST: Paul, Wellington
I don't get why quite so many Lions supporters are having a crack at the Kiwis. You guys should realise what it's like to be in the UK - you get a lot of banter when the ABs tour, but this is not representative of the British public. Likewise a few idiots in the press and a bit of banter is not representative of the NZ public. We are glad you're here - it's one of the biggest things to happen and we are all glad. But we are supporting our boys 100%, and would you expect otherwise? That doesn't mean we disrepect you at all, just we back the ABs to the hilt.
1638 BST: Undercover Kiwi
The Lions would have been desperate to get any kind of win, and they achieved that, but God was it awful. The "Cake Tin", as it is affectionately known, is used to seeing the thrilling running rugby of the Hurricanes. Their helter skelter approach wins fans, but rarely wins matches. But the Welllington Lions, without the backbone of the Super 12 side, were poor. Okay, the conditions didn't help, but the match was a case of the least rubbish side winning. 1628 BST: Kevin, Wiltshire
Mike - Glastonbury have confirmed they're showing it on the big screens by the Pyramid stage. Lets hope the Lions start with a big win, it'll make my 30-hour trip to Wellington on Monday all the sweeter after four nights under canvas!!
1542 BST: Jason, London
Dear Steve in Paris, William Webb Ellis picked up a ball and ran with it. NZers love running rugby and don't appreciate a boring drop goal in the first minute of a game. If you like kicking it so much play Australian Rules.
1521 BST: Laurie Beamont, Ipswich, England
Thankfully our breakdown problems have been addressed, but I am worried about the look of our backline, it looks a bit static. Shame I had to watch a replay of the game due to my evil Maths GCSE.
1519 BST: P Fielding, Cheadle, Cheshire
If you are looking to listen to the commentary, check out 567 medium wave. Eddie Butler commentating on Irish radio. Thanks for the tip about Wilmslow RUFC showing the matches. Might come down if Heaton Moor RUFC aren't showing It!
1516 BST: Gwilym Jones, Machynlleth, Wales
I'm knackered, getting up at 7.30am after nights out it is very painful, on current performances I don't think it is worth the effort.
1511 BST: Steve Perkins, Paris
What has happened to the knowledgeable Kiwi rugby fan? Amusing to hear them boo attempted drop goals as the Super 12 carnival culture takes over. Come on Lions, shut them up!
1501 BST: Matt, Buenos Aires, Argentina
I'm going to be watching it live in Buenos Aires at 4am. Late night or early morning? Local customs have it that it's a late night. Unfortunately I will be hard-pressed to get any of the incredible steaks at 4am. I'll be cheering on the Lions like I was back in Australia 2001, and if Back comes good then we can win it! Viva los Leones!
1354 BST: David, Singapore
Had my trip to Kuala Lumpur planned to a tee. Left home at 11.00am, plane on time, Kuala Lumpur Express, taxi etc. Arrived at JW Marriott exactly at kick-off time. Guess what, no Star Sports, no Lions/Wellington transmission! Tip for all of you in the same predicament: Sentidos Tapas can be persuaded to tune in if you are persistent.
1344: Mike, London
I'm at Glastonbury for the first Test, delighted and disappointed all at the same time. Anybody know if they're going to show it there?
1253 BST: Undercover Kiwi
Wellington deserved to get spanked by about 50 points, regardless of the conditions, but the Lions failed to execute the basics of draw and pass and then use the overlap. Too many players are trying to play themselves into Test contention via individual acts of brilliance, which means the team is failing to achieve what it should be capable of. 1213 BST: Colin McKevitt, Wilmslow
I can't wait until the first Test. All my friends and I are going to be watching it live at our rugby club in Wilmslow at 7.30am. We are having a BBQ breakfast of steak and shrimp, win or lose I am getting a good feed!!
1125 BST: Mike Davies, Limassol, Cyprus
Let's move on from Wilkinson. If he's there for his boot he's irrelevant on this performance, if he's there for his defence ditto. He is not an inside centre, Henson is!!!
1114 BST: Grouse, Auckland (from UK)
I've just listened to Stu Wilson (ex AB Capt) on television New Zealand and he's completely typical of the local types. "Poor ball, poor backs, poor front, poor running, blah blah". He was almost frothing at the mouth. The Kiwis are terrified that their mighty AB's could go down in the Test. Come on the Lions, we're going to pull it together, and I'm going to love living here when we win.
1055 BST: Helen, New Zealand
I've been watching the match on television - well done Lions! The local commentators are something else though, a tad on the biased side.
1013 BST: Lions skipper Brian O'Driscoll, Westpac Stadium:
The ball was like a bar of soap out there and we were probably only one pass away from scoring three or four more tries but hopefully we're saving that. I don't think the television pictures showed how tough it was out there - the stadium had a swirling wind and the surface was very greasy.
1019 BST: Tony Corkery, Berwick St James, Wiltshire
Following on from JPR Williams comments about Wilkinson being handed a Test place... there was a worrying development this morning when he was moved out to inside centre and Stephen Jones came on at 10. If this is an experiment for the Test then Henson would be ousted which would be a travesty!
1009 BST: Jimmy, Dublin
I'm going to be in Bruges (outside Brussels) for the first Test. Does anyone know of anywhere that will be showing the match?
0948 BST: Kendo, Callander, Scotland
Nae luck, Joe&Josh (0926 BST), try getting a new ICT teacher..... from an ICT teacher listening in on NZ radio.
ADVICE ON HOW TO LISTEN TO THE GAME:
0928 BST: James, St. Neots You can listen to live commentary on an Irish radio channel - AM 252 - unbiased and entertaining!!
Martin, London Newstalkzb in Auckland are streaming coverage (www.newstalkzb.co.nz)
Chris, Dublin/Ireland If you can get medium wave / longwave - RTE ( http://www.rte.ie ) have the match going out live on their medium wave (can't remember frequency) and longwave ( 252 )
Ed: We're getting a bit of stick for not streaming the commentary on the website. Unfortunately the BBC can only purchase rights that are made available by the rights holders. In this instance, we asked for them - but were told the rights to make commentaries available online within the UK were not available. Not our fault!
0926 BST: Joe&Josh, Richmond
We are at school and are being shouted at for checking up on the Lions score in an ICT lesson. We've both been moved and are now refusing to do any work. But it's the best backs combination the Lions have, the tries should be flowing.
0856 BST: Lee Williams, Redditch
I'm at work at trying to get live commentary of the game with only a standard radio and the internet at hand. Does anyone know of a station or web-site broadcasting live?
Ed:Sorry. As far as we know BBC Five Live Sports Extra is the only UK radio station broadcasting the game - but you can only receive it with a digital radio (or via digital television), it is not being streamed on the internet.
Journalist Wynne Gray writing in the NZ Herald:
Is (36-year-old) Neil Back's selection against Wellington a tribute to his skills, an indictment of young flankers in the UK or a result of a bloated Lions touring squad?
Take your pick. Whatever your verdict, Back's selection is extraordinary. It prompted a columnist to quiz coach Sir Clive Woodward recently on whether this Lions visit was a major tour or a holiday for the aged.
0831 BST: Dave, Dunedin
Despite the youthfulness of the squad, and the lack of its All Blacks, Wellington should be the toughest provincial side that the Lions would have to face yet.. Nonu, and Weepu have been All Blacks, and Herring, Ormsby, Fa'atau and Gopperth are no mugs.. plus the fact that most of these players were in the Hurricanes Super 12 franchise means they should last far longer than the Bay and Taranaki did...
0741 BST: Lions captain Brian O'Driscoll
There is a bit of pressure tonight. Things didn't go to plan last weekend and it is important this Wednesday team steps up to the plate. The guys are feeling fresh and looking forward to putting this tour back on track. The conditions are not ideal for expansive rugby but we will have to tough it out.
0732 BST: Ian McGeechan, Radio Five Live
If you learn from your losses, you can move on and your own game evolves. We have done that and it is important to deliver now. We don't want to wait another three games. 0655 BST: Kim, London
It's 6.55am and I'm off to watch most of the game before my exam at 9.45. Really hope this Test backline performs, otherwise its going to be a long miserable morning.
0620 BST: Mark, Wellington
Weather is not improving, very wet and cold. There's a good atmosphere in the city, but I don't think it will help the Wellington Lions. I certainly wouldn't want to be the team that faces the Lions after they were defeated by the NZ Maori. Wish I was going tonight, I will have to settle for a warm spot on my sofa, and a nice can of the Black Stuff.
0532 BST: Ian Robertson, Radio Five Live
Surprise, surprise, we're in wet and windy Wellington, and it's wet and windy. These prevailing conditions are not what the Lions ideally wanted, especially having selected a probable Test backline. All eyes will be on Jonny Wilkinson, playing his first game of the tour, the midfield combination of Gavin Henson and Brian O'Driscoll, and wings Gareth Thomas and Jason Robinson, also having their first tour outings. The forwards have to improve dramatically, and if they do that, the Lions should win comfortably. 0329 BST: Aby, Auckland
I think people are reading too much into the early results. These games are just mix and match. The NZ press is too biased and insecure as rugby is the only game now in which NZ is any good. Their criticism of the Lions will backfire against the All Blacks. I am certain the Lions will take the series 2-1 and we will see some good rugby from both sides.
0138 BST: Craig, Wellington
It's cold and wet in Wellington today and expected to be so for tonight's game. This should play into the British Lions' hands as Wellington will have the weakest scrum the Lions have faced so far - I am expecting perhaps a 12-point margin but not a pretty match. Otago on Saturday in similar conditions will be much more daunting for the Lions.
