Jonah Lomu's first match on New Zealand soil in three years ended prematurely on Saturday when he twisted an ankle. The former All Black played 30 minutes for Massey in the North Harbour club competition before leaving the field.
"I found the only dodgy hole on the ground," he said. "But it was good to get out there and have a feel for the game again, especially back home."
The winger has struggled with injuries since making his return to rugby after a kidney transplant in 2004.
He managed only 10 starts during his seven-month stint with Cardiff Blues last season which was ended by an ankle injury.
Lomu played 63 Tests for the All Blacks after making his debut as a 19-year-old in 1994.
He established himself as the most feared player in the game before he was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome, a rare condition that required a kidney transplant.
The 31-year-old still harbours hopes of making it back into the New Zealand team for the 2007 World Cup in France.
