Gloucester wing James-Simpson Daniel has been ruled out of England's summer tour of Australia. The 24-year-old had been due to start Sunday's contest with the Wallabies but he lost his place to Tom Varndell after suffering a dead leg in training.
And he has been admitted to hospital for treatment on a blood clot that has required pain-killing injections.
"He has got a haematoma that has spread through the muscle," said England coach Andy Robinson.
"I went to see him on Thursday, and it is pretty swollen and very painful.
"He is still in hospital, and if he doesn't need pain-killing injections on Friday, he will be released from hospital."
Simpson-Daniel will remain with the squad despite being told that he has no chance of being fit for the second Test against Australia in Melbourne.
He has had a series of demoralising setbacks in his career so far, including glandular fever as well as back, shoulder and ankle injuries, which have restricted him to just nine caps in four years.
Simpson-Daniel impressed with a brace of tries in the clash against the Barbarians at the end of last month.
